About ActiefSpaans

ActiefSpaans is a Spanish language school in The Hague which offers Spanish courses at all levels in small groups, from 4 to 8 participants. It was founded by Peruvian linguist Magaly Grández Ávila. On the basis of the knowledge and experience gained, both as a linguist and as a language teacher, Magaly wants to offer, through ActiefSpaans, Spanish courses of high quality. ActiefSpaans is a project come true which aims to help you learn the Spanish language effectively and to inspire you with the cultural diversity of the Spanish speaking world. In order to do so, ActiefSpaans organises a cultural activity every month (see here for an impression)!

Beginner course 1 (level A1)

Frequency: once a week

Description: this course is  aimed at students who have no knowledge of the Spanish language. The communicative aspect of the language is central to all of our courses. At the beginner level (A1) students are encouraged to actively exchange information about personal data, experiences and interests. In all our courses, attention is paid to both language skills (speaking, writing, listening and reading) and language knowledge (grammar and vocabulary). You do not need to speak Dutch to join a beginners course. In the lessons we try to speak as much Spanish as possible, but, of course, we are more than willing to give instruction in English and/or Dutch when needed.  

Course book: Reader - Spanish Beginners 1 (in these courses we make use of our own material, a booklet called "reader"; this material is available in both English and Dutch).

Preparation: in order to learn the language effectively it is important that students prepare themselves at home for every lesson. Please take into account that preparation (homework) for every lesson will take about 2-3 hours per week.

And then? At ActiefSpaans the level A1 is covered in three courses: Beginners 1, 2, and 3. In each course we make use of a reader. After the course Beginners 1 you can continue with the next beginner courses. After completion of the course Beginners 2 and Beginners 3, students receive a certificate of attendance from ActiefSpaans. Students can continue then with the next level, Pre-Intermedio (level A2).

Pre-intermediate course 1 (level A2)

Description: this course is given in 8 sessions of 1,5 hours. The knowledge gained by the student in the beginner courses (level A1) is further expanded in this course. Through a variety of communicative tasks students are encouraged to actively exchange information in the target language. All the language abilities come into practice during the lessons: speaking, writing, reading and listening. We practise further with basic grammatical rules (learned before) in meaningful contexts and a new grammatical tense is introduced: the past tense.

Course book: Aula Internacional 2, new edition 1. J. Corpas e.a. Intertaal, ISBN 9789460309069. In this course, we cover chapters 1, 2 and a part of chapter 3.

Preparation: in order to learn the language effectively it is important that students prepare themselves at home for every lesson. Please take into account that preparation (homework) for every lesson will take about 2-3 hours per week.

And then? At ActiefSpaans the level A2 is covered in four courses: Pre-Intermedio 1, 2, 3 and 4. In each course we cover almost three chapters of the book Aula Internacional 2. After the course Pre-Intermedio 1 you can continue with the next Pre-Intermediate courses. After completion of the course Pre-Intermediate 2 (level A2.1) and Pre-Intermediate 4 (level A2.2), you will receive a certificate of attendance from ActiefSpaans. Students can continue then with the next level, Intermediate B1.

Intermediate course 1 (B1)

Location:  Prinsegracht 27 / Korte Lombardstraat 6, The Hague

Description: this course is given in 8 sessions of 1h 30m (one session per week). All the language abilities come into practice during this course: speaking, writing, reading and listening. We pay special attention to some of the most complex aspects of the Spanish grammar, eg. the use of past tenses, prepositions and the subjunctive mood. Special emphasis is placed on grammatical correctness and the use of a varied vocabulary when writing texts (100-120 words). Through the use of authentic teaching materials (newspapers, magazines, films, documentaries, and literary works) during the lessons, the lexical repertoire of the learners is further extended.

An then? At ActiefSpaans the level B1 is covered in four courses: Intermedio 1, 2, 3 and 4. After this course (Intermediate 1), students can continue with the next Intermediate courses. In every course we cover three chapters of the book Aula Internacional 3. After completion of the course Intermediate 2 (level B1.1) and Intermediate 4 (level B1.2) students receive a certificate of attendance from ActiefSpaans and are prepared to continue with the next level: Upper intermediate (B2).

Advance course 1 (B2)

Location:  Prinsegracht 27 / Korte Lombardstraat 6, The Hague

Description: this course is given in 8 sessions of 1h 30m (one session per week). In this upper intermediate course special attention is paid to the speaking skills. Students give weekly a short presentation. Complex grammatical aspects are practised thoroughly. Special attention is also paid to writing skills. Students are asked to write an article weekly about a number of topics. As for reading the textbook offers a great variety of articles about social and cultural aspects of the Spanish speaking world. On the basis of these texts students are stimulated to express their views, considering the pros and the cons and also aspects of their own cultures.

In this first advance course, we cover the first two chapters of the book. This book is used for our first three Advance courses (level B2.1).

- Aula Internacional 5, Curso de Español, Nueva Edicion, J. Corpas e.a. Intertaal, ISBN 9789462931350. You can buy this book online, for example, via Bol.com. This book is used for our last three Advance courses (level B2.2).

An then? At ActiefSpaans the level B2 is covered in six courses: Avanzado 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. After this course (Avanzado 1), students can continue with the next Advance courses. In every course we cover two chapters of the book Aula Internacional 4 and 5. After completion of the course Avanzado 3 (level B2.1) and Avanzado 6 (level B2.2) students receive a certificate of attendance from ActiefSpaans.

Private lessons (online)

At ActiefSpaans it is also possible to follow private lessons online. The content, goals, pace and frequency of the lessons are determined in consultation with the student during a free (online) intake interview before the start of the lessons.
Our rates for private lessons online via Zoom are as follows:

  • Individual private lesson: €40.00 per hour
  • Private lesson for two participants: €20.00 per hour p.p.
  • Private lesson for three (or more) participants: €15.00 per hour p.p.
All courses/lessons at ActiefSpaans are VAT-free. The rate for private lessons does not include the purchase of a course book, if required or needed, but includes additional material to be handed out by the teacher.
Due to the lesson preparation, we agree with the student a minimum of 4 lessons (these lessons must be paid in advance).

Payment

  • Once we have received your registration form, you will receive a confirmation per e-mail. An invoice for payment of the corresponding course fee will be sent only if enough registrations (minimum 4) have already been received for the course in question. 
  • You are kindly requested to do the payment at least three days before the course starts through bank transfer.
  • After payment you will receive a confirmation of registration with the exact meeting dates, time and location of the course chosen.
